The Mood at Malibu and the Mountains of Santa Monica

Yesterday was a glorious January day and just a short drive from DTLA one can find a great mix of mountains and ocean. The scenic drive took us along a winding road through Calabasas, Topanga, and a multitude of canyons and hiking trails along the way.

I’ve been to Southern California on many occasions but often find myself tied up in traffic on one highway or another. This time my son decided to take me where the GPS suggested the least amount of traffic. And boy was it delightful ride!

We likened the mountains to many others we have seen. From Hawaii to Maine they come in all shapes and sizes. These Malibu mountains were super green! Hills and valleys of the Santa Monica mountain National Park  range are spectacular.

Not much traffic along this winding Malibu Canyon road , and there were many turnouts to explore hiking, biking, and general sightseeing.

I read an article recently about a mountain lion attack that surprised me, but this range is certainly big enough to support this level of wildlife.

We had no real plans, so we looked up some sights to see while in Malibu. As we strolled along the beach, we were able to get glimpse of how some of the wealthier people spend their time in such a gorgeous place where on one side you spy Catalina Island and just across the Pacific Coast highway (Route 1), there are layers  of fantastic homes on steep  streets with names like Coastline drive and sea breeze drive one can imagine the glamour of these multimillion cliff side villas.

We made our way to the Getty Villa however we were a bit late getting there and it was time for closing. As we were driving toward this villa, we did not know it was The Getty Villa but we were in awe of its beauty.

This is a definite go to next time we drive out that way. Although it is free to visit, For reference, You must enter from the northbound side driveway along the PCH and also you will need proof of vaccination and a reservation time before you can visit.

As we drove along the southbound side we passed many restaurants and piers, surfing, more beaches and of course the Santa Monica amusement park.

It is best to start your drive early in the day so you can see all these wonderful  attractions. There is also ample shopping , gas stations, public rest areas and beaches to enjoy. We noticed parking was $7 but because it is February, that may change for the summer months.

Our ride home was uneventful except for the usual LA traffic.

Get Outside and enjoy your neighborhood!
